Chasing Extinction

Hello Everyone!

It’s time again for a bit of an adventure.  I leave tomorrow for Africa.  For a long time, I’ve wanted to see the Lemurs in Madagascar and roll on Safari in East Africa.  I read a book years ago (“Cry of the Kalahari”) about a couple that dropped out of grad school to start research in Africa after they heard a talk on the decline of African Lions.  Decades later wildlife populations in Africa and Madagascar are still in decline.  For a good overview of what’s going on check out “The Sixth Extinction”.  Sorry to be a downer, but I’m excited to see what I can while I can, and I’ll post a few pictures here for anyone who wants to follow along.

The plan is to travel for 2 months and visit five countries.  I’ll be looking for Great White Sharks in South Africa, searching for the elusive Fossa in Madagascar, scuba diving the Indian Ocean reefs of Mozambique and Tanzania, and of course, photographing the big five of Safari wildlife in Botswana and Tanzania. I’ll also be learning what I can about these magnificent creatures and locations so I can bring my experiences back into the classroom in the spring.

Although I always seem to be jetting off somewhere far away, don’t think I’ve forgotten how amazing it is here at home.  I’ve spent the summer surfing the best surf in several years and increasing my scuba certifications.  I’ve thrown in a few pictures from the summer.  The next update will be from Africa or maybe the belly of a Great White, if the cages are weaker than I think 🙂
